Readings to remember: Wisława Szymborska

Posted in Wisława Szymborska by lyrikline on 11. March 2014

When she was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1996, the award committee’s citation called her the “Mozart of poetry,” a woman who mixed the elegance of language with “the fury of Beethoven” and tackled serious subjects with humor. This clip shows Wisława Szymborska (2 July, 1923 – 1 February 2012) reading her poem Miłość szczęśliwa (‘True love’).

The Polish text and a German translation can be read here, and an English translation on this site, that offers a big archive of Szymborska translations.
